Many studies have been carried out on Ginkgo Biloba in order to determine any scientific basis for the many claims made for it. Two of the major claims are that it helps to improve the circulation, particularly through the smaller blood vessels, and that it has a positive effect in the treatment and prevention of dementia conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease.
Studies carried out on over 3,000 volunteers over 75 to evaluate the effect of ginkgo on memory failed to produce positive results with a daily dose of 240 mg. However, a few other trials on smaller numbers of people appeared to be promising but when followed up with larger trials, were not confirmed. Nevertheless, it is widely used for treating dementia, and there is evidence that Ginkgo biloba effects improvements in memory and thinking, social behavior and helps to reduce feelings of depression. The problem with its effect on Alzheimer’s is that it has to be taken over a long period for the effects to be apparent, and many scientifically conducted tests are still under way.
Nevertheless, many swear by its effectiveness, and the antioxidant properties of ginkgo biloba associated with its proven ability to improve the flow of blood to the brain indicates that it is well worth taking as a supplement, with or without the results of test still underway.
